The blabrigar above them, impressed by Hartford"s stentorian voice, circled repeating "Kinodoku semban" over and over, till the girl called it down to rest quietly on her shoulder. The girl spoke to the bird, which stared at her lips with his head cocked to one side, an attentive student. She repeated four times the same message. The bird nodded, and repeated the phrase to her. "Yuke!" the girl said. The blabrigar spread its scarlet wings and flew up. It circled twice, then headed north, up into the mountains. Of the girl"s message Hartford had understood only the native word for camelopard: giraffu. His Kansan was inadequate. He could understand it only if it were slowly spoken.
But meanwhile, Hartford wanted to sleep.
"A Note," Georges said, waving his cigar. "What the purple polluted hell is a Note supposed to do? I"ve got Aga Kagan claim-jumpers camped in the middle of what used to be a fine stand of barley, cooking sheep"s brains over dung fires not ten miles from Government House—and upwind at that."
“It is ingenious what you have thought of there—decidedly it is ingenious. It may even be true. But you leave out of count the fatal influence of the Tomb.”
They strolled to the veranda steps in silence; then again they said "Good-night," and Kennard vanished swiftly in the darkness.
“Not at all. We must only go around instead of following the beach, or the old trail. It takes us longer, to be sure, but after all what is time when we have the rest of the night before us? You come along with me, and I show you how it can be done.”
"Well, Princess!" said the cheery old medico; "for since I have made you hear I may as well address you by your title--well, Princess, how goes it?"
“Well then” ses she “go down to the Alluyance. Its a place where they get jobs for the rich.”
